We must line up our addends by their ones and tens. We can now write our number sentences vertically which uses the addends’ place value to line up the digits. This is called “check subtraction.” When all the three numbers are used in and addition and subtraction sentence, they are “related.” By creating a subtraction sentence from the numbers from the addition sentence, we can “check” the accuracy of the addition equation. Remember that the larger number that was the “sum” in the addition sentence goes in the front of the number sentence for the subtraction equation.
